Greatest Horror VHS Covers #97: Bleeders

Well we did the Scream VHS cover three entries back and it made me think of the late 90s in K Mart around Halloween. Before K Mart was consumed by Wal Mart, it was the number one place to find GhostFace masks that had a blood gel - filled outer layer that oozed any time you pressed down on a rubber air valve attached to the mask via a cord. You could get this extra iconic outfit for around 20 dollars.

I say this because the blood-filled GhostFace mask reminds me of the VHS cover for Bleeders. There were two editions of the Bleeders VHS, and one had a blood packet on the front that swirled gruesomely any time you pressed down on it, which is probably what everyone who entered the Horror Aisle at California Video did atleast once. I don’t think anyone ever rented the movie though, because it wasn’t hard to see that it probably wasn’t a masterpiece.

The film Bleeders stars Rutger Hauer and has kind of a Vaporwave soundtrack. Those are the only two things I know about it. The VHS cover is interesting to me because I can’t think of another VHS Cover, or DVD cover for that matter with a playful gel packet on front. It seems like there should have been as many of those as lenticular or holographic VHS covers in the 90s. The creatures featured on the cover are unpleasant looking and don’t necessarily say “rent this movie!” I wonder if this film will have a resurgence down the line. I should probably just accept my fate and stream Bleeders on Tubi already, assuming it’s on there.
