Horror VHS cover #96: Night of the Demons

I just watched this movie. This is an iconic cover, although I could see people finding the NOTD 2 or NOTD 3 VHS even more recognizable. This photograph sums up director Kevin Tenney’s trademark horror aesthetic well: it has a classy, misty atmosphere. The smoke is so well lit and photographed that it seems to emulate perfume. I always found the makeup in these films to be competent and kind of generic for the time when all is said and done. I think Angela is more iconic in her human form than she is as a demon.

The crown on her head seems to have a snake weaving through it. What Night of the Demons has going for it are a few iconic special effects moments, a genuinely creepy and authentic setting, and a cast that truly seems to be having a great time. There are a lot of familiar Empire Pictures actors here, and it seems as though some of them shot “Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama” the next weekend.

I like the composition of this cover a lot, and for me it is a staple of any horror VHS collection, even though I don’t own it yet.
